That is a real risk. Prices won’t just jump by x% at once (x being the percentage amount that makes goods more expensive because of tariffs). The fact that prices will go up relatively „slowly“ (though still noticeably quickly) over time makes it very plausible that inflation expectations will go up (because of what people actually see and experience at for example the grocery store). Then inflation would turn sticky and the Fed would have to readjust expectations by raising rates again. I am certain that the Fed is aware of this. It‘s just that the labor market is a bigger concern at this point in time because we can directly observe considerable deterioration there today whereas inflation could or potentially may not be a sticky and significant issue in a year or two from now. Personally I believe that inflation will turn sticky and would prefer a more hawkish Fed but since that won’t happen anytime soon I‘m positioned long.
