I haven't been mountain biking since I was a teenager, but I've been cycling a lot in general again and I'm currently balls deep into building a hard tail. The build is based on a brand new 2017 Trek Superfly 7 frame from Wheel & Sprocket that I got in my size for $200. I'm slapping a Manitou air fork on it w/ 120m of travel; I'm building my own wheelset with wide ID Stans Rims; I got a great deal on 4-piston magura brakes; and I'm going 1x10 Cues u6000 for the drivetrain. (Yes, Cues is kind of heavy but it's durable as fuck.) I actually really like the old fashion Gary Fisher "G2" geometry bc my childhood/teenage bikes were Gary Fishers. so I consider myself very lucky to have been able to buy a G2 frame brand new in 2025. My problem is that the Superfly was designed as a super light XC bike. I really like the geo, but I want the thing to be durable for more trail/down-country use than Superflys were supposed to be capable of. Nothing too crazy, but I'm going to be hitting the black diamonds of Brown County State Park in Indiana & that sort of thing. That's why I went with a 34mm stanchion fork; wide rims for a good, low PSI tubeless setup; and 4-piston brakes. I'm just slightly paranoid that I'm not doing enough to prevent me from breaking the frame in half going full send on a tougher trail.

I spend a lot of time in this group, so it feels like I'm around a lot of people who follow the market. When I'm out in the world, though, I never hear anyone talk about the market, and when I ask people if they invest or follow the market, they say no. I've made some serious gains in the market the last few years, and all I've done is buy and hold. In my mind, every one must be doing it. But, in reality, I don't think that many people do. It's interesting to me to think about.
