If you have a good year, but a few positions are not likely to recover, take the loss and reduce your net profit and hence reduce your tax liability. You don't know if the next year is going to be a good year, so taking the loss now might be better.

Real talk with elder Addy: I’m 45. My wife and I have bought/built, and then exited three businesses for between 3-6MM ea over the last 20 years. Our net worth is high enough that we can do what we want. But we still work. We currently own and operate a bakery and a security integration company. We tried the early retirement thing in our mid thirties and it’s a fucking joke. Anyone who tells you not working will make you happy is retarded, lying, or didn’t have to earn their wealth. Hard work gives meaning to your life in a way managing your wealth and assets/toys will not. Don’t try to gamble your way into a lifestyle that will only make you more depressed. SPY 680P 1/9

Plus a $150k income at my age seems to be around the 1% for that age according to IRS data who can just directly pull the statistics so that must be pretty accurate as well, so if you’re 3 years out of college (probably need a college degree to make that income at that age in 95% of the cases), that’s $450k in lifetime earnings, but according to the net worth calculator, the top 1% threshold is $2M. My math tells me that $2M >>>>> $450k (realistically more life $300k after taxes), so I’m wondering where all these other 25 year olds are getting $2M from. If that’s the case, I’m wondering where my $2M is. Is it supposed to magically emerge with the waving of a magic wand? Or are they all just counting their parents $2M home as their own?

I’m saying the statistics you referred to are distorted because a bunch of young people live with their parents now. This is counting household data, so that includes the 20 something year old and their parents as the same household if they live together. If median net worth for people in their 50s is like 500k-1m, then that 25 year old’s household net worth is counted as the same. Individual net worth is likely much lower

To the people claiming the average 25 year old (my age) is broke, I came across these stats from the fed that really tell a very different story. I was surprised to, but it now seems like all the narratives that the average American is one missed paycheck away from homelessness are all BS and the average person is doing pretty well. I'll just post my reply here again: According to this net worth percentile calculator (https://dqydj.com/net-worth-by-age-calculator/), the average 25 year old is doing pretty well. Median net worth of $40k, >30% have over $100k, almost 20% have $200k, 10% have over $300k, and startlingly 1 in 100 have $2M+ (which is still a lot of people, would’ve thought it would’ve been more like 1 in 10,000). A $13,000 net worth among 25 year olds (I’m gonna pretend that’s all I have since I won’t include any accounts that my parents technically duly control) is only in the 36th percentile. Even with my $150k tech job, I find it very difficult to save anything meaningful in a HCOL city so it really boggles my mind how nearly 1 in 5 people my age have $200k+. Guess plenty of 25 year olds won the crypto lottery or onlyfans or did well with high paying remote tech jobs and a late bloomer like me was virtually broke until about a year ago and I won’t deny that my parents money has played a non insignificant part in why I have a somewhat okay net worth. And no, I really don’t believe that parental wealth plays any meaningful role in these statistics. Even the 90th percentile for most ~60 year olds isn’t much more than $2-3M and I cannot imagine most parents handing off >10% of their life’s work to their kid (and I will say that my parents are solidly in the top 1% of net worth for this age range and I cannot imagine a single scenario where they’d even give me $10k as a lump sum and this seems to be the general principle among others with similar wealth). Though it’s actually somewhat shocking that 1 in 100 60 year olds have $17M+ (would’ve guessed that it would be closer to 0.1-0.2%) These stats shocked me as well as I thought the actual situation would be much grimmer. Something here seems wrong, but they’re from the Fed so I can’t really doubt them plus crypto and onlyfans and remote tech jobs have certainly done wonders.
